TOUGH LITTLE TOMATOES - 25 October 2012

It has been so incredibly windy today with extremely strong gusts.  Boy oh boy did I choose the wrong day to take the cloches off mytomatoes!  But they had all reached the top and it’s no good for the leaves to be touching the sides…so off the cloches came regardless….
I’ve raised all these seedlings from seed and they’re all growing extremely well.  I’m really conscious of blight, so I’ll keep a close eye on them so I can deal with that immediately.
I’ve used pea straw mulch for the first time with my tomatoes.  Last year I had to water them too frequently and it was so difficult trying to avoid getting the leaves wet.
The stakes I’ve used are 2.4 metres long.  It is amazing how much growth we get on our tomatoes each year and my husband made these up for me.  I’ve learnt it’s best to put the stakes in when you plant out so you don’t disturb the roots.  And furthermore, it’s much easier when the plants are tiny rather than having to deal with monster plants!
I can’t wait for these to grow – it is utterly divine to pick fresh cherry tomatoes that are warm from the sun….it has to be one of my absolute favourite garden delights!  (That and the delicious tomato sauce I make from the Grosse Lisse variety!)
