Scorching temperatures here today and the garden is just loving it! My first two Yates Broccoli – Summer Green are starting to form heads! The growth they have had in the past couple of days is utterly unbelievable! I did fertilise the garden a couple of days ago too with my comfrey tea, but the gorgeous weather we’ve had over the past four days has clearly helped! (Looks like it’s here to stay for another few days too….will have to give the garden a good soaking tomorrow that’s for sure!)
I’ve noticed lots of white butterflies hanging around my garden in the last couple of days, so have got out the good old derris dust and sprinkled my brassicas in particular. Last year I had a terrible time with aphids, but the calendulas seem to be a great ‘host’ plant and the only aphids I have in the garden, are all over the calendulas!
The calendulas and lavender that I have planted around the vegie garden as borders, are in full bloom at the moment, and the garden is just humming with bees. This will be great for pollenation of the beans, capsicum, squash, courgettes, eggplant, chilli, peas andt omatoes! (Or basically all the vegies that have lovely flowers that need to be pollinated). In fact, my lovely cottage flower garden looks so beautiful right now and is also humming with bees. It really is doing the job of attracting lots of beneficial insects!
This spring has gone so fast…I just can’t believe summer is right around the corner!
