DIVERSION TACTICS - 7 November 2012

I am feeling a little like a broken record, but I think I gained closure today with my bird issue…
For the past two weeks, the little darlings have been digging out the peat pots containing mycorn seedlings.  I had planted them out weeks ago….and at first when I kept finding the peat pots lying randomly on the surface, I thought that I hadn’t planted them properly….
I was actually starting to think I was going a tad mad, until I discovered ALL BUT ONE of the corn seedlings, had been dug right out of the ground yesterday.  They were scattered all around and as I approached this part of the garden, I found the culprit digging out the last one: a blackbird.
I know they’re only trying to find worms and lots of other goodies to eat and feed their young, but they are driving me crazy and I’ve lost quite a fewcornseedlings in the process.   The funny thing is…they don’t seem to touch the tiny cucumber planted right next to the corn….hmmm….go figure!  Furthermore, the blackbirds have adopted the same tactics in other areas of my garden, so I have to get on top of this problem pronto!
So to combat this I devised a plan….another ‘aluminium squid’ has been put into this garden to ward off the birds and I’m going to cover up the soil with pea straw mulch.  It’s been in place now for one day…….and all the corn is still in the ground.  Fingers crossed my little diversion tactics work!  So the score is currently:
BIRDS:       10
MICHELLE:   1
