AS COOL AS A CUCUMBER - 24 October 2012

Just quickly planted out my cucumber seedlings.  I planted two different varieties: Yate Cucumber - Continental & Yates Cucumber – Long Green.  And I’m afraid to report that only the Long Green variety germinated.  I was a bit disappointed as I had the same issue last year.  My plants last year only lasted for a month after planting out, so I do hope that I have success this year!
I’ve popped a cloche over each of the cucumberseedlings as they love warm temperatures and this should help them to get started.  Of course, this is just a one litre juice bottle.  I push them into the ground so they don’t blow away.  They seem to stay in place over our other tender veges – even in the 110kph winds we experienced last week!
I’ve worked plenty of manure and compost into the soil and I will feed them at regular intervals.  When I water veges such as cucumberand courgettes, I’m very careful not to water the leaves as I find that they start to develop mould quickly if you get the leaves wet – so I’m really making a conscious effort not to do that this year!
I’ll put some trellis behind them in a week or so for them to grow on and I’ve planted them out in a really sunny spot so hopefully they’ll love their position!
The garden is extremely dry today so I really need to get out and water the rest of the garden now before our guests arrive for dinner!
