Happy first day of summer! Today I’ve harvested the most broadbeans ever! We still have plenty of pods growing in the garden and this is our third decent harvest from the broadbeans this season. I’m going to use all of them to make falafel and then freeze half the mixture.
I’m amazed at the great success we’ve had with our broadbeans this year. Last year was my first time growing them and unfortunately we had terrible problems with rust. The rust ended up spoiling a lot of the pods and the plants didn’t produce a lot of pods at all in comparison to this year. Of course, they are growing in a different bed this year as I am a keen follower of crop rotation, but I’ve also been using Yates Copper Oxychloride on them this year and I think it has really helped as a preventative measure against rust. It is an excellent product which can be used against many different fungal diseases. In fact, I’m also using it on our tomatoes to prevent early blight which we’ve had problems with in the past.
Well, I have a few more pods to extract more broadbeans from and a whole lot of empty pods to take out to the compost, so best I get moving! I can’t wait for dinner tonight!
