I have been reading a lot lately about fellow bloggers having issues germinating chilli. This is my second year growing Yates Chilli Pepper ‘Long Red Cayenne’ successfully so I thought I might share how to do it…as I really struggled the first time and had no success whatsoever. Trial and error has helped me find the secret to my success:
STEP ONE: GERMINATING SEEDS
I plant out my seeds in the last week of August in my home-made seed propagator in seed raising mix and then water them in. I place the lid on and then pop them on the window sill where they get lots of light and I don’t water them again until I start to see that the seeds have germinated. This usually takes about two weeks.
STEP TWO: CARING FOR BABY SEEDLINGS
Once the leaves reach the top of the lid, I take the lid off and leave them inside until they’re about two months old (which is now for me). Then I harden them off in my cold frame for about a week or so.
STEP THREE: PLANTING OUT
Lastly, I plant them out with a cloche over the top and by about late November, flowers will start to appear with small chillis appearing in late December.
I don’t have the luxury of a glasshouse, and I’ve found that if you follow these steps: you’ll have a bumper crop to use fresh, or dry or freeze…
This picutre was taken today of my healthy seedlings before I popped them in the cold frame. Good luck and I hope this helps!
