Hmm…not sure that ‘Jack’ will be climbing up these beanstalks and finding a giant at the top to yell “Fee, fa, fie, fo, fum!” But I am ever hopeful that they grow super tall and give me lots of super yummy beans!
With five different varieties of beans growing my garden, I can’t wait to use them in my recipes. One of my favourites is an ancient Tuscan bean recipe from Italy which is a bean soup and it is incredibly simple to make…but the TASTE! Oh it is divine!
I have talked about the varieties I’m growing in a previous blog, so just to re-cap, they are:
- Yates Climbing Beans – Scarlet Runner
- (another brand because Yates don’t have an equivalent) Climbing Beans – Butter
- Yates Climbing Beans – Purple King
- Yates Dwarf Beans – Borlotti
- Yates Dwarf Beans – Tendergreen
One in particular is doing really well and it is one of the Yates Climbing Beans – Scarlet Runner. It’s the first time I’ve grown these and I was encouraged to grow these by a client of mine who used to give me bags and bags of them last summer. (I gave him tomatoes in return…) Some people think they’re a bit tough to eat, but if you are good at cooking – there are great ways to use them and they are fantastic in a myriad of dishes! Not tough at all in my opinion!
I’ve only ever grown dwarf beans in previous years, so I’m quite interested in seeing how these climbing varieties go!
