A few of my lettuces were about to go to seed along with some spinach and it was most likely due to insufficient water and this incredibly warm weather that we are experiencing here in Wellington. Unfortunately I haven’t had time to water my garden at all and we haven’t had a rain for 5 days. I feel awful, but I’m just too busy with work to even think about doing it!
This is so unlike me as I have ensured for almost three years, that I have at least 10 minutes solitude in the garden each day to relax, unwind and let the day’s pressures melt away. Oh well…a little neglect will probably do garden the world of good as I tend to be a tad overzealous when it comes to gardening: harvesting things far too early and sometimes over-watering things, or using too much fertilser…
Nevertheless, this has meant that I’ve been able to give lots of lettuce away to people as I managed to harvest the plants prior to flowers starting to appear. And it’s a nice feeling to share things with other people – even if the vegies aren’t quite perfect…they still taste lovely!
On the upside, I just planted out new lettuce and spinach seedlings last weekend, so we will have no problems with our on-going continuous supply. (Must remember to plant more seeds this weekend though, so they’re ready in 4 – 6 weeks for planting!!!!)
I have a super busy weekend ahead and am probably going to only manage 1 hour in the garden each day, but it is a high priority as I desperately need to get out in the fresh air and just potter in the garden. Roll on Christmas I say!
