SQUASH CHALLENGE - 11 November 2012

This is the first time I’ve grown squash before…I bought a packet of Yates Squash Mix and planted them out in early September and I now have five little squash appearing on this plant.  I thought I’d give this a try as I love courgettes, and I wanted to challenge myself to grow a new vegetable this year.  I am not normally a fan of buying mixed seeds in a pack, but I thought this would help me to choose single varieties to grow next year.
I am a little puzzled however, as the seed packet said that maturity would be reached in 6 – 7 weeks.  Well it’s been 10 weeks so far…mind you, it also says that these are meant to be planted out mid spring to early summer, so perhaps that is why they’ve taken a bit longer than I expected.
The other squash plants are no where near as abundant as this one.  The one pictured is actually growing in my home-made polytunnel, so it’s a lot warmer in there and clearly this is helping it to grow at a faster rate than the others.
The soil is full of lots of organic matter from compost to coffee grinds, horse manure to seaweed, leaf mould to ash…I found that having a really rich organic soil was extremely beneficial to the courgettes last year, so I prepared this soil in the same way for the squash.
I notice a few weeds sprouting in this picture, so I had better get out and do some weeding between the showers we’ve been having today!
