Today I’m going to put some of my awesome home-made mulch into my garden: leaf mouldfrom my elm trees. Before I got into gardening, I used to think that it was such a chore to rake up all the leaves from these trees in autumn….but then I learnt a clever tip! It’s so great when nature gives us these gifts!
- I rake up all the leaves as they drop in autumn.
- Put them into big black garden bags.
- Poke holes through the bags with a garden fork.
- Pour a little bit of comfrey tea into the bag.
- Tie them up and leave them down the bag of the garden until spring/summer when the leaf mould will be ready to be used as mulch.
My two enormous trees give us about 5 massive bags every autumn. I usually find lots of worms inside the leaves as I spread them out on the garden. This bag is headed for the cucurbitaceae garden (pumpkin, cucumber, squash and courgettes). Hopefully this will cheer me up as someone has broken off two of my foxglove plants out the front of my house and I could see they were just about to send up a big stalk for the flowers…so I’m a little bit upset by this today.
