I have just finished a busy day at work and thought I might check up on my Garden Plan to ensure that I have planted everything out in the right bed.
Three years ago I drew up this plan of my dream garden and carefully measured everything out and then worked out what veges would be grown in each raised bed. Grouping the vegetables together has worked out really well as each group of plants tend to like the same conditions. I have grouped everything into the following groups:
- Solanaceae: Potatoes
- Solanaeceae: Tomatoes, Capsicum
- Alliaceae: Onions, Garlic, Leeks, Shallots, Spring Onions
- Cucurbitaceae: Cucumber, Courgettes, Squash, Pumpkin
- Fabaceae: Peas, Beans, Broad Beans
- Brassicaceae: Cabbage, Broccoli, Chinese Cabbage
- Cruciferae: Radish, Swede
- Umbelliferae: Carrots, Celery, Parsnip
- Miscellaneous: Lettuce, Corn
Although beetroot, spinach and silverbeet belong to the Chenopodiaceae family – I’ve put them into different beds…I worked out a crop rotation cycle based on a four year plan as I once read somewhere that you should not grow veges in the same bed each year as this helps to stop the build up of pests and diseases in the soil. Each group needs different nutrients and so it means that all the nutrients are used in the soil as you rotate them into different beds.
Another thing I do it note down when I planted everything. I have a really busy life with my own business and a huge amount of voluntary work, so this helps me remember what I need to do.
Well it seems that I’m on the right path! So I might just get out and enjoy some of the afternoon sun in the garden!
