I am so excited today…the first glimpse of a Yates Continental Cucumber seedling is poking its’ head up from the seed raising mix. I can’t wait to use these in raita with curry and in Greek salads!
I have created little seed propogators using old takeaway containers. They were really simple to make and a great way to upcycle! I use this technique for seeds such as courgettes, pumpkin, squash and cucumbers – anything that is frost tender:
- Take an old takeaway container and heat up a metal skewer over a hot flame.
- Push the skewer through the bottom of the container to make drainage holes.
- Sit container inside a deeper takeaway container.
- Cut up an old lid to make four dividers. (This way the roots won’t get disturbed when you transplant the seedlings).
- Fill with Yates Black Magic Seed Raising mix.
- Place your desired seeds into the mix and water in.
- Place a lid on the containers and pop on a window sill and wait for the seeds to germinate. In four weeks or so you'll have lovely seedlings ready to harden off outside for planting!
