FIRST GLIMPSE OF SUMMER VEG! – 15 September 2012

I am so excited today…the first glimpse of a Yates Continental Cucumber seedling is poking its’ head up from the seed raising mix. I can’t wait to use these in raita with curry and in Greek salads!

I have created little seed propogators using old takeaway containers. They were really simple to make and a great way to upcycle! I use this technique for seeds such as courgettes, pumpkin, squash and cucumbers – anything that is frost tender:

  1. Take an old takeaway container and heat up a metal skewer over a hot flame.
  2. Push the skewer through the bottom of the container to make drainage holes.
  3. Sit container inside a deeper takeaway container.
  4. Cut up an old lid to make four dividers. (This way the roots won’t get disturbed when you transplant the seedlings).
  5. Fill with Yates Black Magic Seed Raising mix.
  6. Place your desired seeds into the mix and water in.
  7. Place a lid on the containers and pop on a window sill and wait for the seeds to germinate.  In four weeks or so you'll have lovely seedlings ready to harden off outside for planting!
