Two years ago, my husband I started building these ultimate no dig raised bed gardens out of recycled roofing iron. The idea was that we would make them 1 metre high so we didn’t have to bend over later in life when we’re old and grey. (We intend on gardening forever!) These cost us less than $150 including paint, so we were pretty delighted with the cost and the overall aesthetic of the finished garden.
We have four of these raised beds and have drawn up a four year rotation cycle to move our crops around each of the beds.
This picture is of me excavating the soil around the raised beds for our paving.
We filled our raised beds with the following materials to ensure excellent drainage and growing media:
- Twigs
- Compost
- Seaweed
- Gravel
- Newspaper
- Pea Straw
- Manure
