YOU DO THE MATH... - 20 November 2012

I am like a small child on Christmas day when it comes to gardening!  Today I was so excited to see three little courgettes on one of my plants!  I just love this time of the year when everything is growing super fast and looks so fantastic in the garden.

The other great thing is that it gives us lots of variety to choose from when it comes to dinner.  All the vegetables we eat are grown by ourselves and at this time of the year, we have far more options than the winter months – that’s for sure!  It means we only ever eat vegetables that are in season, unless we have something from the cupboard that I’ve preserved or something that managed to make it’s way to the freezer…but it does mean relatively long waits before we can eat certain types of vegies.
I was so tempted to buy courgettes at the supermarket during my weekly shop, as they are one of my absolute favourites.  Until recently they’ve been just over $10 a kilo for imported ones.  But today I saw that they were $3.99 per kilo for NZ ones…well….that’s more than what I paid for my pack of Yates Zucchini - Blackjack…and I’m likely to get far more than a kilogram’s worth from that pack of seeds!
I know some gardeners get really sick of courgettes due to the vigorous growth, but I use them in so many different recipes in a variety of ways…and to be honest: I just can’t get enough of them!  Plus, I generally only have a maximum of two plants.
Hopefully, by this time next week, we’ll have had our first courgette meal of the season.  Oh I just can’t wait!  And if we harvest too many, I’ve got plenty of friends and family who will just love to receive the surplus!
