Organisation is the key for me and my succession planting. That way, I can always be harvesting and planting and I don’t end up with all my vegies ready at the same time and can stagger harvesting.
However, I seem to be experiencing a little trouble with my lettuce seedlings at the moment…12 lettuce seeds haven’t germinated which is quite bizarre as I plant out the same seeds every 4 – 6 weeks for a continuous supply. I haven’t really had any issues over the past three years, so maybe the seeds have been washed away. I can’t quite tell at this stage which ones haven’t germinated, as I only write ‘Lettuce’ on the labels, not the variety but it’s either:
- Yates Lettuce - Frilly Mix
- Yates Lettuce - Great Lakes Iceberg (but I think these have actually germinated...see top left corner of picture)
- Yates Lettuce - Cos
In this picture, I’ve also got:
- Yates Endive (second lot of seeds I’ve planted so far - I sowed some directly in the garden about 5 weeks ago and we’re harvesting them for salads already!)
- Yates Broccoli - Summer Harvest (third lot I’ve seeds I’ve planted this season…we just can’t get enough of broccoli in our house….)
- Yates Radicchio (second lot of seeds I’ve planted so far – six seedlings are currently planted out and doing really well and will hopefuly be ready to harvest in about three or four weeks)
- Yates Cabbage - Sweet Eureka (fourth lot of seeds I’ve planted this season. I’ve planted seedlings from two different sowings that are doing okay, but taking a very long time to grow. My first sowing that I planted prior to the start of the challenge, all went to seed)
- Yates Spinach - Summer Supreme (second lots of seeds I’ve planted this season. I made the switch about four weeks ago to this variety as I grow Yates Spinach – Winter Queen through the colder months. All the seedlings are doing really well and we are harvesting some leaves every few days…a few at a time for salads or filling a whole colander when we’re having a spinach dish…)
I’ve had to sprinkle Yates Blitzem all over these seedlings as I’ve had a few slug and snail issues nibbling at the newly germinated broccoli in particular, but Blitzem has really done the trick!
Well it is an amazing day here today, but I’m going rollerblading and doing some other fun activities today…….will check on the garden’s progress later in the day!
